Why Become a Nurse in Massachusetts?

While many individuals choose to become a nurse because it is a meaningful career that allows them to help others, it is also a highly viable career with competitive salaries and limitless opportunities that make it easy to answer the question: Why Become a Nurse?

Nurses, especially those who have a BSN degree or higher, are in high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, our country is in the midst of a looming healthcare crisis—one that could result in a nationwide shortage of at least 1 million nurses by the year 2020.

And, not only are there a lot of jobs to fill, there is good money to be made in nursing. In 2015, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the median annual wage for registered nurses as being $67,490.

Reasons nurses are in demand:

  • Increased emphasis on preventive care.
  • Growing rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity.
  • Higher demand for healthcare services from the baby-boom population, many of whom are living longer than past generations.

Is Nursing Right for You?

While nursing is certainly a meaningful and highly rewarding career, it is also demanding and stressful. So, before you decide to enroll in our ABSN program, it is important that you be able to answer “yes” to the following 9 questions:

  • Do you consider yourself a good listener and communicator?
  • Do you have patience for difficult people?
  • Are you highly organized and detail oriented?
  • Do you feel empathy toward others?
  • Can you emotionally handle human suffering?
  • Can you think clearly in stressful situations?
  • Can you smile while cleaning up bodily fluids?
  • Can you work within an unpredictable schedule?
  • Are you able to stand on your feet for 12 hours at a time?

Just remember when it comes to being a good nurse, critical thinking and decision making are just as important as empathy and caring when it comes to quality patient care.
